Rasam is an integral part of a south-Indian meal. There are a lot of varieties of rasam that are made in different parts of India. I share my usual rasam recipe that is prepared almost daily by me at our house.
Ingredients:
- Mustard seeds - half a teaspoon
- Cumin seeds or Jeera - half a teaspoon
- Asafoetida or hing - half a teaspoon
- Oil - 1 teaspoon
- Tomato - 1, medium sized, cut into quarters
- Garlic - 3 cloves
- Tamarind - a small bit
- Curry leaves - a few
- Water - 1.5 cups
- Rasam powder (Either home-made or store-bought) - 1 teaspoon
- Fresh coriander leaves - a few, finely chopped, for garnishing
- Salt to taste
Method:
- Soak the tamarind in the water for about 15 minutes
- Add the tomato and garlic to the tamarind soaked water
- Mash the tomato with your fingers
- Keep aside
- Heat the oil in a kadai or wok
- Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida
- Once the mustard seeds splutter, add the curry leaves
- Sauté well
- Add the tamarind soaked water along with the mashed tomatoes and garlic
- Now, add the turmeric powder, rasam powder and salt
- Allow it to come to a boil
- Transfer to a serving bowl
- Add the chopped coriander leaves for garnishing
- Enjoy the rasam as part of your meal along with steamed rice, mutton sukka, egg bhurji, egg curry, Chicken 65, Kurkure bhindi, paneer bhurji, masala vadai, Medu vadai, beet root masala vadai
Tips:
- You may also drink about half a glass of this rasam daily to improve digestion and thereby to help with weight loss
- Ideally, the rasam tastes good if you crush the tomato in water with your hands, if you are not comfortable doing that, you can cut it into small pieces as shown in the photo above in the ingredients section and add it to the recipe
Please do try this recipe and enjoy the art of cooking!!!
