KAARA SOMAS / SPICY SOMAS

Hi friends,
Kaara Somas / Spicy Somas is a spicy version of the sweet Somas that we make in our home. It tastes somewhat like a samosa but in the shape of a Somas! It can be made as an evening snack and relished during monsoon especially.

For the outer cover:
INGREDIENTS:
  • Refined flour - 1 cup
  • Rava / Semolina - 3tsp
  • Salt - 1tsp
  • Butter / ghee - 1tsp 
  • Water - 1/4-1/2 cup
  • Carom seeds / cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp (optional)
Knead all the above ingredients to make a stiff dough
Allow it to rest for 15minutes

For the stuffing:
Ingredients:
  • Potatoes -  2 nos, medium size, boiled and mashed
  • Onions -  1 medium sized, finely chopped
  • Green chillies- 2 nos, finely chopped
  • Ginger - 1/2 " piece, finely chopped
  • Garlic - 3 cloves, finely chopped
  • Cloves- 3 nos
  • Cinnamon - 1/2" piece
  • Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
  • Fennel seeds- 1/2 tsp
  • Cardamom - 1 pod
  • Coriander powder- 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 3 tsp
METHOD:
  • Heat Oil in a pan
  • Add the cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, cumin seeds and fennel seeds
  • Add the chopped ginger, garlic and green chillies
  • Saute well
  • Add the onions
  • Saute well for a minute
  • Add the turmeric powder and coriander powder
  • Saute well
  • Add a little water 
  • Allow it to cook by covering with a lid for 2 minutes, till the water evaporates
  • Add the mashed potatoes
  • Mix well
  • Allow it to cool
To assemble and make the Somas:
INGREDIENTS:
  • The dough
  • The potato stuffing
  • Oil for deep frying
  • Water - 1/4 cup
METHOD:
  • Divide the dough into small portions
  • Make balls with them
  • Flatten each ball into a round disc
  • Place about 1-1.5 tsp of the potato stuffing on one half of the circular dough
  • Cover it over with the other half of the circle
  • Wet the inner edge of the circle with water and seal the edges
  • Heat oil in a wok / kadai
  • Deep fry the prepared Somas in hot oil
  • Remove from oil
  • Allow it to cool 
  • Store in an airtight container

VAZHAKKAI PORIYAL

Hi friends,
Vazhakkai or raw banana poriyal is an easy to prepare recipe that can be had as an accompaniment with sambar or kaara kulambu in a South-Indian meal.



Ingredients:

  • Raw bananas / Vazhakkai - 2
  • Green chillies - 2, vertically slit 
  • Onions - 1, medium sized, finely chopped 
  • Curry leaves - a few
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon 
  • Salt - to taste 
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon 
  • Cumin seeds or jeera - 1/2 teaspoon 
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons 
  • Water - 1/2 - 3/4 cup
Method:
  • Cut the raw banana into cubes or desired shapes
  • Keep aside 
  • Heat the oil in a pan 
  • Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves 
  • Once the seeds splutter, add the green chillies and chopped onions
  • Sauté well till the onions turn transparent 
  • Add the turmeric powder and salt 
  • Sauté well 
  • Add the cut raw bananas
  • Saute well
  • Add the water
  • Allow it to cook covered with a lid
  • Once cooked, Transfer to a serving bowl 
  • Serve hot with accompaniment of your choice
