Golu is the most important part of navaratri in the south-indian state of Tamil nadu. Golu refers to the arrangement of dolls in an organised manner in different steps or padis of the golu stand. I remember my mother telling me stories about navaratri Golu that used to be kept in my grandmother's house during her childhood. There is a way of organising the golu dolls in each step of the golu stand.
Ideally, the golu stand consists of nine steps signifying the nine days and nights of navaratri.
Step 1:
The topmost step of the golu has the goddess in any form in the centre with idols of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma with their respective consorts namely, Goddess Parvati, Lakshmi and Saraswati by their sides; placed on either side of the main idol kept in the centre.
Step 2:
In the step next to that of the gods is usually placed the idols of Thevargal, Navagrahas, Nayanmargals
Step 3:
The next step is occupied by rishis, Mahaans and munivargals
Step 4:
The next step is arranged with dolls of Human beings, famous celebrities
Step 5:
The birds and animals are arranged in this step
Step 6:
This step is occupied by various insects and fishes
Step 7:
Various handmade dolls, dolls made of sea shells and other craft work can be placed in this step
Step 8:
This step is occupied by manmade structures like replicas of temple gopurams, temple tanks, famous buildings
Step 9:
The bottom most step has miniature dolls of plants, vegetables and fruits
It is not compulsory that Golu has to be kept in nine steps. You can arrange a 3-step, 7-step, 5-step Golu also.
The highlight of this year's Golu dolls is athivaradar Golu set. There a variety of dolls of athivaradar sets available in the market, both the lying down pose and standing pose. There are also sets of athivaradar lying in the anathasaras pond. There are dolls of athivaradar made from fig tree itself available in the market.
