Rava upma is a very easy to prepare dish. It is supposed to be rich in Calories and hence a very good breakfast recipe, as the breakfast has to be the heaviest meal of the day.
Rava upma is a very easy to prepare dish. It is supposed to be rich in Calories and hence a very good breakfast recipe, as the breakfast has to be the heaviest meal of the day.
Ingredients:
- Rava or Sooji or semolina - 1 cup
- Onion - one, big sized, finelychopped
- Green chillies - 2
- Dry red chilli - 1
- Mustard seeds - half a teaspoon
- Jeera or cumin seeds - half a teaspoon
- Chana dal (Bengal gram) - one teaspoon
- Split urad dal (Black gram) - one teaspoon
- Cashews - 6 numbers
- Curry leaves - a few
- Salt to taste
- Oil - 3 tbsp
- Ghee or clarified butter - 1 tbsp
- Water - 2 cups
Method:
- Heat the ghee in a pan
- Add the rava and saute well for 1 minute
- Remove from the stove and keep aside
- Heat oil in a pan
- Add mustard seeds, jeera, split urad dal, chana dal and cashews
- Saute well
- Add curry leaves and allow it to splutter
- Add the dry red chilli and green chillies
- Saute well
- Add water and cook covered with a lid for 5 minutes
- After 5 minutes, once the water starts boiling, add the roasted Rava
- Cook with lid covered for a minute
- Then, remove the lid
- Keep stirring till the desired consistency is reached
- Serve hot with any side-dish of your choice
Tip:
- You can add coconut, in the form of small pieces or freshly grated, to the recipe to add flavour and taste the Upma
- In that case, you have to add the coconut after adding the onions and saute well
