India, being a country with lot of diversity in culture, celebrates the festival of harvest in different parts of the country with different names. In the south indian state of Tamilnadu, it is called the festival of Pongal. In the other southern states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, it is celebrated as Makar Sankranti. In the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, it is celebrated as Lohri. In the northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, it is celebrated as the festival of Bihu.

Pongal is the festival of harvest. After the harvest, pongal is a dish made from the newly harvested rice, traditionally cooked in earthen pots and offered to the Sun God, the source of energy for all life forms in this earth.
The festival is a form of Thanksgiving celebration to the Sun God for the good harvest that the farmers had the previous year.
In Tamilnadu, the day following the Pongal is celebrated as Maatu Pongal. The cows which have been the farmers friend and partner in the field work resulting in the harvest are worshipped. The famous jallikattu is held on this day in different parts of Tamilnadu which showcases the might of the bulls of the farmers and the courage of the players involved in the same.
